Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee brought down the curtains on a high-octane campaign for the Nandigram assembly seat with a dramatic end. Mamata Banerjee, who was injured in her foot minutes after filing the nomination papers for Nandigramon on March 11, ended her political campaign for the seat by standing up with her fractured leg.

As the last of her marathon rallies ended, she insisted that she would stand up for the national anthem. Her party leader Subrata Bakshi and Dola Sen helped her stand up from the wheelchair and she stood on one leg during the national anthem.

TMC chief and Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee fractured her leg during a roadshow in Nandigram on May 11. While the TMC chief has claimed that the injury was a result of a plot hatched by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), eyewitnesses have said that she injured her foot when the car’s door smashed into her by mistake.

High-octane battle of Nandigram

The high-octane campaign for the Nandigram Assembly constituency has come to an end as the seat goes to the polls on April 1, the second phase of Bengal polls.

The seat is most closely-watched as it is witnessing a direct contest between Mamata Banerjee and her former trustee Suvendu Adhikari, who joined the BJP last year.

Election at Nandigram is marked by moves and countermoves by the TMC and the BJP. The BJP has projected the assembly election as a battle between Mamata Banerjee’s “appeasement” politics and its Hindutva campaign making Prime Minister Narendra Modi the party’s face in all of Bengal.

In Nandigram, the narrative is different on the ground. Suvendu Adhikari is the face. This is a clever ploy by the BJP. This deprives Mamata Banerjee to make her electoral fight a battle between locals and outsiders, as she calls PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who has been campaign vigorously for the BJP in Bengal.

On the last day of the Nandigram campaign, while Mamata Banerjee held a series of public rallies, her opponent Suvendu Adhikari was accompanied by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on a roadshow through the constituency. Both candidates have claimed certainty to win.
