Off-spinner R Ashwin produced a batting masterclass on a turning track on Monday to hit his 5th hundred in the ongoing 2nd Test against England in testing conditions at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. Ashwin had spun a web around England batsmen to claim 5 for 43 in the first innings and is likely to play a key role with the ball later too.

Ashwin brought up his first hundred against England in Tests off 134 balls as India reached 264 for 9 at the time of publishing this article. Ashwin is also only the second Tamil Nadu player to score a Test century at Chepauk after Kris Srikkanth, who hit 123 against Pakistan in 1986/87. Also, first 100 for him against a team other than WI

Ashwin has now become the only second player after Ian Botham to achieve the double of a hundred and five wickets in the same match on more than two occasions.

Ashwin counter-attacked the English bowlers with his aggressive brand of cricket as he surpassed Jacques Kallis, Gary Sobers, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushtaq Mohammad with a unique double of a hundred and 5 wickets in the same match for 3rd time. Polly Umrigar and Vinoo Mankad are the only other Indians who have achieved this unique all-round feat.

Earlier, the hosts lost five wickets in the morning session but Virat Kohli raised 96 runs with Ashwin to boost India’s hopes of a series-leveling victory at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Sunil Gavaskar was full of praises for R Ashwin as former India captain said that the Chennai player along with skipper Virat Kohli has shown the rest of the world how to bat on a surface like this one.

“And he’s walked the talk. Yesterday after having taken those five wickets, at the press conference he [Ashwin] was asked if one has to be a little bit patient on this surface and then get used to it. And now he has walked the talk, he has shown everyone exactly how to bat on this surface. Now he scored a 60, a very very valuable 60. But like I said, he actually said that this is what you need to do and he has gone out and done it himself,” Gavaskar said about Ashwin.
