Former cricketer-turned-commentator Ajay Jadeja heaped praise on Team India head coach Ravi Shastri for the way he has changed the mindset and intent of the players in every format of the game. (India vs England)
Jadeja, who played with Shastri in 1992, said Kohli is the Indian team captain but it is the coach who “is the one running” the unit.
“Ultimately, this team is Kohli’s, but he is the one running this team Ravi Shastri. The intent has been visible, not only today but for the last 3-4 years.
“There is no change in approach irrespective of the result. This time remains the same. The difference is the thinking,” Jadeja said in a video on Cricbuzz.
India haven’t won an ICC tournament under Shastri yet but their graph in Test cricket has seen an upward movement ever since his appointment with 28 wins from 46 matches, making him the most successful coach of the national team in the longest format.
As far as Shastri’s ODI record as coach goes, he has made India won 57 out of 91 ODIs with a winning percentage of 62.64%.
“That thinking is instilled in this team and this generation too is such. What the players think, the options they have. Players who are in and out, there are so many options that people of the old system would have gotten mental disorder.” (India vs England)
The World Test Championship’s summit clash in June will be the first final of an ICC tournament that India will play under Shastri. India will face New Zealand in the WTC final at Lord’s in June.
“His style of play shot-making was different. But aggression wise, Ravi was always right up there. His style of batting, his captaincy. The way he thought of aggressive, that skill was unique. He was never one to back down,” Jadeja added.
