Lack Of Sleep Can Boost Death Due To Heart failure

Adequate sleep is key to a healthy lifestyle. It plays an important role in the physical as well as mental health. Sleep deprivation is a common problem these days and besides making you groggy it can make you prone to other health conditions too. Now, not getting enough sleep can double the chances of dying from heart disease or stroke, particularly in people with risk factors like diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Researchers from the Penn State College of Medicine did an analysis based on 1,344 adults, with an average age of 49, who were asked to sleep for one night in the laboratory. The results showed that 39 per cent had at least three risk factors that when clustered together are known as the metabolic syndrome. The cluster of danger signs included body mass (BMI) higher than 30, elevated total cholesterol, blood pressure, fasting blood sugar and triglyceride levels.

Those with metabolic syndrome who slept less than six hours in the lab were 2.1 times more likely to die of heart disease or stroke than those who did not have at least three risk factors for heart disease. The findings were published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

Julio Fernandez-Mendoza, the lead researcher commented on the same, “If you have several heart disease risk factors, taking care of your sleep and consulting with a clinician if you have insufficient sleep is important if you want to lower your risk of death from heart disease or stroke.
