Lockdown will be imposed in Parbhani district in Marathwada region of Maharashtra from March 24 to 31 to contain the rise in Covid-19 cases, a senior official said on Tuesday.

“The lockdown will come into force at 7pm on Wednesday. It will be strictly implemented till March 31 with an objective to curb the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the district,” he said.

District collector Deepak Mugalikar claimed stopping people from going out of the house at night didn’t help in controlling the spread of the virus as the graph of fresh cases kept rising.

“The district administration had earlier prohibited people from stepping out of their homes at night, but the move failed to curb the cases,” he said.

Parbhani district recorded 1,132 new cases to its tally since March 1, taking the cumulative count to 5,843 as on March 22.

The state Health Minister, Rajesh Tope, on Monday said that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray may enforce lockdown in some cities if the new cases continue to climb.

However, some members of the Covid-19 task force of Maharashtra were against the imposition of blanket lockdowns, saying such strategy cannot contain the spread of coronavirus.
