The Udupi district administration in Karnataka has declared the Manipal Institute of Technology campus as a containment zone. The decision was taken after 59 Covid-19 cases were recorded in the campus between March 11 and 16. Of this, 17 cases were reported on March 15 and 25 cases on March 16.

The movement of students in hostels and others residing in the campus will now be restricted for a period of two weeks.

A fresh round of Covid-19 tests will be conducted on students in the campus. Faculty and essential staff will be allowed inside only with proper identification.

While Manipal is a college town, the restrictions have only been imposed on the campus of the Manipal Institute of Technology and not other educational institutions.

The MIT administration has decided to conduct all theory classes online and defer the laboratory and practical classes. MIT, one of India’s premier academic and research institutions, attracts a large number of students every year.

Meanwhile, Karnataka logged 1,275 new Covid-19 cases and four related fatalities, taking the caseload to 9.63 lakh and the toll to 12,407, the state Health Department said on Wednesday. The Udupi district reported 42 new cases.
