Though the ban on indigenous languages was lifted, the Bantu Education system was inadequately equipped. During the 1970s, there were a number of disparities in the provision of racially separate education.

Thousands of students took to the streets to protest against the new Government System of Education. They wanted the right to learn in their own language. Consequently, the new system was unpopular. Eventually, the uprising swept across South Africa.

Although the uprising was limited to Soweto, it made an impact on other parts of the country. Many students had been frustrated by the new medium of instruction.

The government’s directive caused an uproar among both teachers and students. The resulting protests were more peaceful in the beginning, but they eventually turned violent. Sadly, a number of students were killed.

Thailand

National Youth Day in Thailand is a day of celebration and empowerment. On the anniversary of the birthdates of two former Thai kings, Chulalongkorn and Ananda Mahidol, young people are encouraged to be positive, to take action, and to realize their responsibilities.

The United Nations declared 1985 as the International Youth Year. As a result, the government of Thailand designated September 20 as National Youth Day. There are several activities to participate in. This year’s event included a communal meal and a youth leadership training program.

This year’s program also included an opportunity for participants to interact with government ministers and other government officials. Awards were given to outstanding young citizens. These awards were aimed at encouraging the country’s best students to become leaders and citizens.

During the program, more than 400 participants came from NGOs, migrant learning centers, and government organizations. Twenty-four youths participated in a training program designed to enhance their personal development and contribute to their society.
