The new Mahindra Thar has garnered more than 9,000 bookings in merely four days of its launch. The SUV was introduced in India on October 2, with the bookings commencing on the same day. The 2020 Mahindra Thar can be booked at a Mahindra dealership or through the official website of the automaker for an initial payment of Rs 21,000. The deliveries of the SUV will begin on November 1.
The Mahindra Thar test drives have started in a phased manner around the country. The test drive and demo units of the SUV are currently available in 18 cities. Mahindra and Mahindra will introduce the test drive units in 100 more cities by October 10 and in the rest of the country by October 15.
The new Mahindra Thar price starts from Rs 9.80 lakh (ex-showroom, India) and goes up to Rs 13.75 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The SUV gets a couple of trims — AX series and LX series. The AX series has three variants — AX STD, AX, and AX OPT. The LX series comes in a single variant — LX. You can either go for the four-seat configuration (all front-facing seats) or the six-seat layout (two front- and four-side facing seats).
Talking about the top options, the Thar AX STD and the Thar AX variants come with a soft top only. For the Thar AX OPT and the Thar LX variants, the customers can choose between convertible and hardtops.
The powertrain options in the second-generation Mahindra Thar include 2.0-litre mStallion Turbo-GDi petrol (150bhp/320Nm) and 2.2-liter mHawk CRDe diesel (130bhp/320Nm). The engines can be paired either with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. The 2020 Mahindra Thar gets the 4WD system as a standard feature.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar comes with features like round headlamps, front fog lamps, dual-tone bumpers, LED taillamps, tailgate-mounted spare wheel, 18-inch alloy wheels with Thar branding, drizzle-resistant 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, TFT multi-information display, multi-function steering wheel, electrically-operated HVAC controls, roof-mounted speakers, tyre pressure monitoring system and cruise control.
The new Mahindra Thar is based on the third-generation body-on-frame chassis. It has an all-new suspension set-up. The front axle disconnect feature is standard. Also available are features like brake locking differential on the front and rear axles and mechanical locking differential on the rear axle. The 2020 Mahindra Thar has a ground clearance of 226mm and water wading depth of 650mm.
