Army personnel, who were honoured for their services, need not go and buy cheap medals from the market as a proof of commendation anymore. They can finally flaunt their real medals with pride.
The Army on Tuesday procured over 17 lakh service medals for soldiers, who were never honoured with genuine medals over the years.
“Integrated Headquarters of Ministry of Defence (Army) has concluded a contract for procurement of a total of 17.27 lakh service medals of 17 different types,” the Army said on Twitter.
“The procurement has enabled Indian Army meet all outstanding demands of service medals in respect of soldiers, who have served and are serving in the Indian Army,” they further added.
The medals had not been issued since 2008 by the department of medals in the Defence Ministry that looks into this matter.
The new medals procured will take care of the pending numbers and for future, more medals will be obtained.
While those conferred with gallantry awards such as Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra and Vir Chakra, had a medal presented to them, others who were given awards for their service and other commendations, had to make do with a cheap white metal replica on their own.
