By Daphne Clarance: Tennis champion Serena Williams remembered late fashion icon Virgil Abloh on Tuesday. A year after his death, she took to Instagram and shared a throwback photo with the late fashion designer and penned a heartfelt note.

Her tribute post read, “It’s been a year and I still can’t put into words the sorrow that I feel. Your touch on the world will live on forever and I couldn’t be more grateful to have witnessed it and had the chance to collaborate with you. I still miss you all the time. Forever and ever.”

The black and white photo featured Serena and Virgil from Nike’s ad campaign collaboration. Virgil Abloh was the CEO of the Milan-based fashion house Off-White who died on November 28, at 41 due to cancer.

During an interview with Vogue, Serena spoke about regretting not wearing Virgil’s design – the envelope-pushing look he designed for her to wear at the 2019 French Open.

“I still kind of regret not doing what Virgil told me to do. He wanted me to wear this long skirt with the crazy train, and then a cape with a train, and then just walk out on the court. And I’m thinking, ‘Virgil, I like fashion, and I like pushing the envelope, but this — I just don’t think I can do this,'” she told the publication.

Serena and Abloh first collaborated in 2018 for a Nike campaign and later at the 2019 Met Gala. In February this year, Serena along with Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Amber Valletta and Helena Christensen walked the runway in the designer’s honour at Paris Fashion Week.
