As senior Congress leader Jitin Prasada on Wednesday severed ties with the party and joined BJP, the party’s Chhattisgarh unit took a jibe at him and thanked him for leaving.

In a tweet on Wednesday afternoon, soon after Jitin Prasada joined BJP in Delhi, Chhattisgarh Congress quipped, “Jitin Prasada Ji ka Congress party chhodne ke liye dhanyavaad (Thank you Jitin Prasada for quitting Congress)”.

Jitin Prasada met Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his residence before joining the BJP at the party headquarters after months of a rift with the senior Congress leader.

On joining BJP, Jitin said, “I have a three-generation connection with Congress, so I took this important decision after a lot of deliberation. In the last 8-10 years I have felt that if there is one party that is truly national, it is BJP. Other parties are regional but this is a national party.”

He also thanked Congress leaders who had supported him in his long career with the party.

“I felt that what is the relevance of staying in a party if you can’t protect interests of your people or work for them. I felt I was unable to do that at Congress. I thank people in Congress who blessed me all these years, but now I’ll work as a dedicated BJP worker,” said Prasada on joining the BJP.

Jitin Prasada was among the G-23, the Congress’s rebel group which demanded overhauling of the party organisation after the 2019 Lok Sabha poll debacle.

Jitin was rooting for strengthening the Congress’s organisation in Uttar Pradesh by reclaiming the Brahmin vote bank, which once was the stronghold of the party. Jitin was actively participating in Brahma Chetna Samvad to mobilize Brahmins in Uttar Pradesh. This did not go down well with the Congress, which maintained a distance from the campaign.
