Lovlina Borgohain has scripted history! She has assured India of its second medal at the Tokyo Olympics after beating former world champion Chen Nien-Chin of Chinese Taipei in the quarter-final of the Women’s Welterweight boxing at the Kokukigan Arena on Friday.

By virtue of a place in the semi-final, Lovlina Borgohain is assured of at least a bronze medal. She is only the third Indian boxer after Mary Kom and Vijender Singh to win a boxing medal for India at the Olympics.

“Feeling very good after winning the quarter-final, next up is my semi-final. I will definitely try to do better than this in the semi-final. I want to try and win the gold medal for India,” Lovlina told India Today from Tokyo on Friday after bossing her quarter-final bout.

The 23-year-old from Assam showcased class and fearlessness as she outpunched her senior opponent from Taiwan 4-1 in the quarter-final match. Lovlina started on a high, going toe-to-toe with the experienced boxer and won the opening round 3-2.

Lovlina dominated it so much so that Chen was under pressure to bounce back. And that gave the opportunity for Lovlina to go after her opponent. Chen fell into the trap with Lovlina bossing the 2nd round and winning it 5-0. The Indian boxer played it smart from there as she knew she was almost there. A 4-1 result in the final round meant a convincing win for the Indian boxer.

advanced to the quarterfinals in her debut Olympic appearance, defeating German veteran Nadine Apetz in a closely-fought last-16 stage bout on Tuesday.
