Xiaomi’s April 23 launch event just got bigger. The Chinese electronics manufacturer had already announced two flagship smartphones Mi 11 Ultra and Mi 11X both set to be unveiled in India on the mentioned date. Now, it has confirmed the India launch of its biggest and most premium smart TV in the country, for the same date. Mi QLED TV 75 will be launched in India on April 23. The smart TV was unveiled globally earlier this year and will debut as Xiaomi’s largest TV in the country.

This television features a QLED 4K display and runs on Android 10. It has a built-in microphone for Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. The announcement comes a month after Xiaomi introduced its first-ever Redmi TV in the country. The company aims to differentiate the two line-ups with more offerings by the end of this year.

Xiaomi bets big on 75-inch category

The Mi 75-inch TV will mark Xiaomi’s entry into a category that is yet to take off in India and has limited options. In an exclusive conversation with India Today Tech, Eshwar Nilakantan, Category Lead – TVs, Mi India, said that. Xiaomi should have entered the category six months ago but there were few challenges that delayed the process.

“I would say that we should have entered this segment six months ago. There is no denying that aspirations for Indian users are going up. When we entered the market, 24-inch was the dominating screen size, but it has vanished now. The 32-inch models are more sought after now. That will change again in few years,” he said.

Eshwar explained that one unique challenge Xiaomi faced with respect to Mi 75-inch TV was that the technology to manufacture QLED TV in India was non-existent. So, it first solved that with last year’s 55-inch QLED TV. Then, no one from the company’s headquarter travelled to India in the past six months due to COVID-19, leading the local resources on their own. Yet, Xiaomi has assured of the quality of the product.

Even though Xiaomi is manufacturing the TV in India, the industry currently is facing a lot of challenges, including the shortage of components which makes it difficult to keep the cost down. However, it will help the company save on import duties and pass on the benefit to customers.

“It’s not like if you manufacture in India, the price goes down. China manufactures for the world and because of that cost goes down. They also have a lot of automated processes. So, if you are manufacturing a TV in India and one in China, the Indian model will be marginally expensive. The savings come from the duty costs that you don’t have to pay,” Eshwar said.

Xiaomi is investing in Make in India because we believe that India is able to match China’s manufacturing capabilities in future, we will also get the benefit in cost which can be passed on to the eventual price, he added.

Xiaomi now has two different television series in India and hopes to differentiate them from each other by the end of this year.

“The Mi TVs will be offering what is latest in terms of technology while Redmi TVs will have what is absolutely needed. In terms of price point, we are yet to make a decision but by the end of this year, there will be more clarity on the positioning of two devices,” Eshwar said.

Mi QLED TV 75 price (expected)

There is no doubt that this will be Xiaomi’s most premium smart TV in the country. But, the company will look to undercut competition which selling same size TVs for over Rs 1 lakh. In Europe, the Mi TV Q1 75-inch is priced at EUR 1,299 (roughly Rs 1,14,300). Xiaomi claims that the TV has been entirely Made in India which will help it keep the cost-competitive.
