Google Messages is rolling out a new feature called “Your profile,” giving users more control over how they present themselves to contacts and message recipients.
Previously, customisation options within Google messages were limited. Now, with “Your profile,” users can edit their displayed name and choose a profile picture that reflects their personality. This fosters a more human touch in messaging, allowing you to show off a bit of yourself beyond just a phone number.
What it means for users
The feature also prioritises privacy. Users can choose who gets to see their profile information. Three options are available:
- Your contacts: This setting displays your profile details only to people saved in your address book.
- People you message: This option lets anyone you exchange messages with see your profile information, regardless of whether they are saved as a contact.
- No one: Choose to keep your profile information completely private.
How to access the feature
Accessing and customising your profile is simple. Look for the profile picture icon in the top right corner of the Google Messages app. Tapping on this icon opens the “Your profile” menu, where you can edit your name, select a picture, and choose your privacy settings.
The “Your profile” feature is currently rolling out to Google Messages users on the stable channel. If you haven’t received it yet, be patient; the update will likely reach your device soon.
