After 34 years, West Indies humiliate Pakistan to clinch Test win

After 34 years, West

NEW DELHI: Spinner Jomel Warrican claimed a five-wicket haul as the West Indies secured a historic Test victory in Pakistan for the first time in nearly 35 years on Monday.

The visitors won the second Test in Multan by 120 runs on day three, leveling the series 1-1.Pakistan had earlier claimed the opening Test in Multan with a 127-run victory.

Warrican, who finished with nine wickets in the match and 19 in the series, exploited the sharply spinning pitches to perfection, giving Pakistan a taste of their conditions.

This win marked the West Indies’ first Test triumph in Pakistan since their victory in Faisalabad in November 1990. It also ended the team’s winless streaks during their tours in 1997 and 2006.

Chasing 254 and resuming on 76-4, Pakistan’s hopes rested on Saud Shakeel, but Kevin Sinclair dismissed the left-hander for 13, caught in the slips, further dimming the hosts’ chances.

Babar Azam top-scored with 31, while Mohammad Rizwan added 25 as Pakistan were bowled out for 133.

Warrican dismissed nightwatchman Kashif Ali for one, leaving Pakistan reeling at 76-6. Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha added 39 runs for the seventh wicket before Warrican trapped Salman leg-before for 15 and bowled Rizwan to leave the visitors just two wickets from victory.

Gudakesh Motie chipped in with 2-35, dismissing Noman Ali for six, while Warrican fittingly claimed the final wicket, bowling Sajid Khan for seven to seal the emphatic win.

The defeat dropped Pakistan to ninth and last place in the ICC World Test Championship standings, while the West Indies finished eighth. Title-holders Australia will face South Africa in the June WTC final at Lord’s.
