OpenAI said that ChatGPT, its API access, and Sora experienced a short outage on Friday.
OpenAI has said that access to ChatGPT has mostly been restored after the widely popular AI tool stopped working for many users worldwide on Friday, December 27.
ChatGPT’s developer API (application programming interface) and the startup’s newly launched AI video generator, Sora, were also down for a few hours.
“We are currently experiencing an issue with high error rates on ChatGPT, the API, and Sora,” OpenAI posted on its official status page, adding that the outage was caused by an “upstream provider.”.
A few users reported seeing an “internal server error” message after entering their prompts on the ChatGPT platform.
As of 7:34 am on Friday, OpenAI has confirmed that Sora and the API access to ChatGPT are fully operational. It further said it continues to work on an overall fix for ChatGPT.
Around the same time as the ChatGPT outage, Microsoft reported that one of its data centres in the US experienced a “power incident.” However, it is unclear if the two incidents are linked. For context, the Redmond-based tech giant is not only a major investor in OpenAI but also acts as its exclusive cloud service provider.
A power incident in South Central US AZ03 affected multiple services. We have applied mitigation and are actively validating recovery for the impacted services. Further updates will be provided in 60 minutes, or sooner as events warrant,” Microsoft said, adding that power has been “fully restored” to the affected data centre.
