News agency PTI reports that cybercriminals targeted the Sri Lankan police’s social media accounts and the official website of the government’s Printer Department on Tuesday. Police Spokesman and Superintendent K.B. Manathunga confirmed the attack: “Cyber-attacks hit Our YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X. By now, we have restored all of them other than YouTube.” He added that the hackers have been identified, and investigations are underway.
In addition to the police’s social media accounts, the hackers also hacked the official website of the government’s Printer Department, which publishes all government announcements and documents.
However, according to the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), a state agency, the group behind the attack has yet to be identified.
“We can safely say that the website data had not been compromised; they have only added certain data,” CERT spokesperson Niroshan Ananda told reporters.
