Google chief marketing officer Lorraine Twohill: ‘…companies like Google are more like a…’

Google-CEO

Google’s Chief Marketing Officer, Lorraine Twohill, challenged the idea of a linear career path. Twohill, who oversees a team of over 4,000 employees, believes that traditional career paths with steady upward climbs are often unrealistic. In a recent appearance on LinkedIn’s This Is Working podcast, she pointed out that career progressions frequently involve industry and department switches, and even unexpected job losses.

Instead of rigidly adhering to a fixed plan, Twohill encourages young professionals to embrace the journey, explore different teams and roles, and acquire diverse skills.

Drawing an analogy, Twohill likens working at Google to navigating a jungle gym, where individuals can explore various paths and experiences. She stated “Enjoy the journey. Learn as much as you can. Life and companies like Google are more like a jungle gym than a career ladder. Try different roles, explore different teams, acquire new skills and stay informed.”

Twohill also shared a valuable career lesson learned early on. As a junior employee, despite not having all the answers, she proactively engaged in discussions by asking critical business questions such as “What were our earnings last quarter? What’s our margin? How do we price this?”. This experience, she said, instilled in her the importance of understanding the business and staying informed.

Originally from Ireland, Twohill began her career in marketing for European travel companies. Her career trajectory took an unexpected turn when an opportunity to collaborate with Google led to a series of interviews, culminating in her joining the company in 2003 as one of its first non-American marketing experts. She subsequently moved to the US to lead global marketing efforts.
