A report claims that Google is developing a new gesture-based method to activate Gemini Live AI voice assistant on Android. This update is expected to make the AI feature more accessible. Currently, users can only access Gemini Live within the Gemini app. However, this new gesture-based trigger could provide a more convenient way to initiate voice conversations with the AI chatbot. This development comes as Google continues to explore ways to increase the adoption and usability of its AI technologies. Android users can activate Google Assistant through various methods, including voice commands, long-pressing the power button, or using on-screen shortcuts.
Activating Gemini Live on Android with gestures: what to expect
According to a report from Android Authority, the Google app version 16.2.39 includes an unannounced feature related to Gemini Live activation. The feature, discovered during an Android application package (APK) teardown, is not currently active in the public version of the app, meaning users will have to wait until its official rollout to test the new functionality.
The update reportedly replaces the diagonal swipe gesture, which previously activated the Google Assistant, with Gemini Live—provided the device has Gemini set as the default assistant.
The report also shares a demonstration of the diagonal swipe gesture, which brings up the real-time AI voice conversation interface in full-screen mode. This allows users to start speaking with Gemini immediately.
The Gemini Live interface also includes a “Disconnect” button at the bottom. Tapping it redirects users to the full-screen Gemini app. Meanwhile, the back button or gesture returns the user to the home screen.
The release timeline remains uncertain since Google has not officially announced this change. This feature may also be in the testing phase and not made available to the public.
