Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S25 series at the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event on January 22, 2025. However, the phones may not be the only devices we see at the launch event.
Samsung is all set to host the Galaxy Unpacked event in San Jose, California, on January 22, 2025. The company is expected to launch the Galaxy S25 series at the event, including the Galaxy S25, S25+, S25 Ultra, and possibly the long-rumoured S25 Slim. However, the phones may not be the only devices we see at the launch event. Reportedly, the company may also unveil its first XR headset, codenamed Project Moohan at the Galaxy Unpacked. This move comes at a time for the XR industry where Apple’s Vision Pro launched last year. While generating excitement, it also highlighted areas for improvement regarding user experience and accessibility.
Samsung, however, seems determined to avoid the same pitfalls with its Vision Pro rival. Project Moohan is being developed in collaboration with tech giants Google and Qualcomm. While Samsung is leading the development, Google is creating a dedicated Android XR operating system, and Qualcomm is lending its expertise to XR platforms. Together, the trio is aiming to address key challenges like comfort and a lack of engaging content, which have hindered the adoption of previous XR devices.
At the Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung is expected to showcase a prototype or possibly a teaser of the XR headset, giving visitors a first look at its capabilities. The headset is expected to hit the market later this year. Reports suggest it will also integrate Google’s generative AI service, Gemini, to offer a smarter and more intuitive user experience.
XR technology is clearly on the rise, with Samsung aiming to take a headstart over the competition. But it isn’t alone in this race. Meta, which generated quite an interest with its Ray-Ban smart glasses, is reportedly working on new glasses featuring built-in displays, slated for release later this year. Meanwhile, Sony is set to launch an industrial XR head-mounted display on January 23, developed in collaboration with Siemens. Even Chinese smartphone makers like Vivo are entering the XR space, with plans to roll out devices of their own.
Samsung is also exploring smart glasses. Qualcomm previously confirmed that the company is working on XR-powered glasses. While there’s no word on whether Samsung will showcase these at Galaxy Unpacked, their development gives us an idea of the growing potential of wearable technology in the years ahead. Market research indicates that the smart glasses market is gaining momentum, with shipments expected to skyrocket from a few million units today to 20 million by 2030.
