In today’s digital age, Instagram has become a crucial platform for businesses to connect with customers. However, a growing threat looms: impersonating scams. These scams involve fraudsters creating fake Instagram accounts that closely mimic legitimate business profiles, aiming to deceive users and damage brand reputation.

What is an Instagram impersonating scam?

In this scam, fraudsters create fake Instagram accounts that resemble legitimate business profiles. These imposter accounts often use stolen or altered images, similar usernames, and content that mimics the original account to deceive unsuspecting users.

How scammers operate:

 

  • Deceiving customers: Scammers may contact potential customers through direct messages, offering fake deals, promotions, or exclusive access. They might even solicit personal information or payment for goods or services.
  • Damaging brand reputation: These fake accounts can damage a business’s reputation by posting misleading or harmful content, engaging in inappropriate behaviour, or running fraudulent schemes that tarnish the brand’s image.
  • Financial loss: Businesses can suffer losses due to lost revenue from diverted sales, fraudulent transactions, and the costs associated with damage control and restoring customer trust.

How businesses can protect themselves:

  1. Strong passwords & two-factor authentication:
    • Strong passwords: Utilise unique and complex passwords for your business Instagram account.
    • Two-factor authentication (2FA): Enable 2FA to add an extra layer of security by requiring a code from your phone or authenticator app and your password.
  2. Regular account monitoring:
    • Proactive checks: Regularly search for accounts impersonating your business using variations of your brand name or username.
    • Monitor mentions & hashtags: Keep an eye on mentions and relevant hashtags to identify potential imposters.
  3. Engage with customers:
    • Direct communication: Encourage customers to contact you through official channels (website, email, phone) for inquiries or support.
    • Address concerns Promptly: If you discover an imposter account, address the issue publicly on your official channels and warn your followers.
  4. Watermark your content: Add watermarks to your images and videos to deter unauthorised use and make it easier to identify stolen content.
  5. Report impersonators:
    • Use Instagram’s reporting tools to report any suspected impersonation accounts directly to Instagram.
    • Document evidence: Collect evidence such as screenshots of the imposter account, fraudulent messages, and any negative impact on your business.
  6. Educate your team: Ensure your team is aware of this scam and knows how to identify and report impersonators.
