Kangana Ranaut is a Sikh body seeking a ban on emergencies in Punjab.

Actor Kangana Ranaut reacted on Friday to the Gurdwara Committee’s request to ban her film Emergency in Punjab. She shared a post on X, calling the move ‘complete harassment of art and the artist’.

The 38-year-old re-shared the post made by Sukhpal Singh Khaira, MLA, Bholath, in which he advocated the ban on film. Kangana, a BJP MLA from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, mentioned that she respects all religions. The actor further cited her growing-up years in Chandigarh.

She added, “I have the utmost respect for all religions, and after studying and growing up in Chandigarh, I have closely observed and followed the Sikh religion. This is a complete lie and propaganda to tarnish my image and harm my film #Emergency (sic).”

On Thursday, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami wrote a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann demanding a post-release ban on the movie in the state. The committee also protested across the state against the screening of the film.

In his letter to Mann, Dhami opposed the release of Emergency in the state and said, “If the movie is released on January 17, it will enrage the Sikh world, which is natural (sic).” The letter further accused the film’s makers of spreading venom and furthering ‘an anti-Sikh agenda’.

While the government has yet to react to SGPC’s demands, theatre owners in Punjab have decided not to screen the film following the protests.

Arriving and written by Kangana, Emergency also features Anupam Kher, Vishak Nair, Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman, and the late Satish Koushik. The film highlights the political events in India between 1975 and 1977 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared an ’emergency’.
