Justin Trudeau Resigns: Donald Trump asserted that a merger would eliminate tariffs, lower taxes, and ensure Canada’s security against threats from Russia and China. Together, what a great nation it would be!!!”
US President-elect Donald Trump responded to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation by saying that Canada should become the “51st state.” Trump has also raised this issue before.
This time, in a post on Truth Social, Donald Trump said that the move could benefit a lot of Canadians. He said, “The United States can no longer suffer the massive trade deficits and subsidies Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this and resigned,” Trump wrote. Claiming that such a merger would eliminate tariffs, lower taxes, and ensure Canada’s security against threats from Russia and China, he asserted, “Together, what a great nation it would be!!!”
In a meeting at his Mar-a-Lago resort with Justin Trudeau, Donald Trump said that if Canada’s economy collapsed under US tariffs, it could merge with the US. Trump has long criticized Canada’s trade practices, particularly its trade deficit with the US. He had previously threatened a 25% tariff on all Canadian imports if the country did not take stronger action to curb migration.
Justin Trudeau’s resignation comes amid falling poll numbers and internal divisions in his own party. His exit from the top position marks the end of his tenure after nearly a decade in power. In his resignation, Justin Trudeau said “If I have one regret… I do wish that we’d been able to change the way we elect our governments in this country,” adding that “Voters should be allowed to pick their second and third choices on the voting ballot itself, instead of the current system, which is set up to play to the advantage of those who want to polarise the situation and play Canadians against each other.”
