A controversy has started online after images surfaced showing Walmart selling underwear and slippers printed with the image of Lord Ganesha, a Hindu deity. Many have called the use of sacred imagery on such items disrespectful, sparking widespread backlash and calls for sensitivity toward cultural and religious sentiments.
The Hindu American Foundation highlighted the issue and posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), “Dear @walmarthelp: @HinduAmerican has written directly to @Walmart regarding the disrespectful misuse of Hindu imagery on slippers & bathing suits. Ganesha is a deity worshipped by more than a billion followers of Dharma religions worldwide as the remover of obstacles. We ask that these disrespectful items be immediately discontinued from sale. We are ready to discuss the commercial use of Hindu images and have detailed guidelines here: https://www.hinduamerican.org/projects/commercial-use-hindu-images-guide.”

This sentiment was echoing by many others, highlighting the importance of cultural sensitivity in product design and marketing.
Walmart removed some items.
Following the online backlash, Walmart removed some Ganesha-printed products from its website. “Success! Thank you, @walmarthelp @Walmart, for removing the Ganesh slippers from your online catalog. We appreciate your responsiveness and look forward to continued conversations about respectful use of Hindu imagery,” posted Hindu American Foundation on X.
