Peacock Curry Video: One Indian YouTuber from Telangana, Kodam Pranay Kumar, has landed himself in trouble by posting a viral video of preparing a traditional peacock curry recipe. In no time, the video had garnered an overwhelming response that generated much outrage and suddenly fast-tracked the legal investigation. He has 277,000 subscribers on the YouTube channel and normally gets 500 to 1,000 views on every recipe video.
Legal Consequences for Violating Wildlife Protection Laws
The Indian peafowl is the national bird of India and includes the male peacock as a type or class of animal in its own right, which is therefore afforded very high levels of protection under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. Violation of the provisions that prohibit the hunting, killing, or capturing of peacocks would be punishable by at least three years’ imprisonment, extendable to seven years, along with a fine.
Akhil Mahajan, superintendent of police, Rajanna-Sircilla district, said, “A case has been booked under relevant acts, and stringent action will be taken against him and whoever is involved in such activities.”
Animal Rights Activist Demands Justice
Animal rights activists claimed that it was a regular habit for Mr. Kumar to post such videos on his channel; the authorities considered it a serious threat to the enforcement of wildlife protection laws. A team of forest officials visited his village, detained him under the Wildlife Protection Act, and sent a sample of meat, purportedly chicken curry, found in his house for forensic analysis.
Past Instances of Peacock Flesh Consumption
This is not the first such incident. In June, two farmers from Telangana’s Vikarabad district were arrested for allegedly eating peacock meat following a complaint by forest officials, who found peacock feathers in an open field. The peacock died of electrocution, after which the farmers took it away. Three labourers were similarly arrested in Odisha in the year 2023 for hunting a peacock and eating its meat—a rather disturbing trend in wildlife exploitation.
Strict Penalties and Ongoing Investigation
Since the controversial video has already been taken down, animal activists are now demanding strict penalties against Kumar, more so because it was stated that this was not the first time he posted videos about illegal activities, including cooking wild boar curry. Chased by police, Kumar is currently on the run, and the investigation is underway.
This viral video Indian update shows just how dire the situation is, to the extent of actually serving as a wake-up call to conserve India’s national bird better and take much-needed enforcement laws put in place for wildlife protection.
