IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack – Netflix’s New Series Under Fire

Another web series named ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Commandeer’ by Netflix ignited a major controversy in India. The web series is a fictionalized version of the real-life hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC 814 in December 1999 to Kandahar. It has been facing criticism and blamed for distorting facts and offending public feelings. This discussion has arrived at such a high pitch that the Indian government has called the content head of Netflix India to make sense of the issue.

IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack Release Date

‘IC 814: The Kandahar Capture’ finally dropped on Netflix on August 29, 2024. A series by Anubhav Sinha incorporates an impressive cast involving Vijay Varma, Naseeruddin Shah, and Pankaj Kapur, among others. The series is a performed adaptation of the exceptionally notorious Kandahar hijacking and quickly arose as one of the most-seen series on Netflix.

IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack Controversy

Surjit Singh Yadav, a farmer and the head of the Hindu Sena association, has documented a PIL in the Delhi High Court. PIL had petitioned for a request against prohibiting the Netflix series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ and called upon the CBFC to cancel the validation given to the show. Plea said the series distorts the religious identities of the real hijackers, who were Muslims and are named Ibrahim Akhtar, Shahid Akhtar Sayeed, Sunny Ahmad Qazi, Zahoor Mistry, and Shakir, it said.

However, the Indian government document, which is a statement by the Union Home Minister published on January 6, 2000 (not 2006), states that during the IC 814 hijacking, the terrorists went by different aliases: Chief, Doctor, Burger, Bhola, and Shankar. These were the names the terrorists used to address each other inside the plane during the hijacking incident. The controversy surrounding the Netflix series focused on confirming these aliases in the official document, as the show used the same names.

What happened in Kandahar Hijack?

Indian Aircraft Flight 814-an Airbus A300-was captured by five masked men not long after it entered Indian airspace from Kathmandu to Delhi on December 24, 1999. It was then taken to a few objections to Kandahar in Taliban-governed Afghanistan.

It prompted an eight-day stay during which a rundown of demands was made that included the release of three terrorists: Maulana Masood Azhar, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheik, and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar. The Indian government needed to surrender to the requests for 154 travellers and the team on board. Then-External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh went all the way to Kandahar to deliver the terrorists himself-a, but the decision was still debated.

Who Died in the Kandahar Hijack?

The hijackers killed one traveller and harmed a few others during the trial, which lasted eight days. The plight finished with the release of these three terrorists, who continued later to commit more terrorist activities, including the Mumbai attacks of 2008. The series also has been panned for not giving enough importance to exposing psychological trauma from these events and many other terror activities of the militants that were freed.

Government Response

The government has taken serious consideration of the growing controversy. The authorities have summoned the content head of Netflix India to explain the decisions taken on how the hijackers will be projected in the series. This controversy about the series has yet again revived the debate about the limitations on creative freedom for filmmakers and expected responsibilities to portray historical events, when dealing with themes such as terrorism.
