Kargil Vijay Diwas History

The Kargil War in 1999 marked an extension to the India-Pakistan dispute over Kashmir, which had been prevailing since the partition of these countries in 1947. Since then, there have been several wars between them. However, with both countries conducting nuclear tests in 1998, the tensions reached a high fever pitch.

The feeling of suspicion prevailed unabated even after the declaration of Lahore in early 1999, which was oriented towards diffusing tension between the two countries. A small group of officers within Pakistan’s military started the infiltration of Kargil, an area under Indian administration, to compel India to resolve the Kashmir issue finally. Their move miscalculated New Delhi’s response and international attention.

India then sent off a determined mission to recover the domain in May 1999, bringing about intense battles and casualties. Though India won at last, it reiterated how serious the Kashmir dispute is and how important it becomes for the two nations to have a peaceful resolution with a very high degree of urgency.
