Nirjala Ekadashi 2024 on 18th June, is the most significant and difficult Ekadashi out of twenty-four Ekadashis observed in a year. This year Ekadashi will start on 17th June at 4:43 a.m. and will continue till 18th June, 6:24 a.m. The fast will be done on 18th June. Ekadashi fast is observed twice a month and is dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu.

It is also called as Pandava Ekadashi, Bhimseni Ekadashi or Bhima Ekadashi. Bhimsen, the second Pandava brother was never able to control his hunger while his wife, Draupadi and other brothers would do Ekadashi fast. Sensing a dishonour to Bhagwan Vishnu, he went to Maharishi Vyasa to find a solution.

Maharishi Vyasa suggested Bhima to do a single Ekadashi fast without eating or drinking. This single Nirjala fast will compensate for other Ekadashi fasts in the year.

According to the Panchang, Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month will begin from 17th June, 4:43 a.m to 18th June, 6:24 a.m. The Nirjala Ekadashi 2024 fasting time will be observed on 18th June.

It is also called as Pandava Ekadashi, Bhimseni Ekadashi or Bhima Ekadashi, is the most important Ekadashi out of twenty-four Ekadashis. Dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu, this fast removes all the sins and trouble of the devotee and promote their well-being and will power. If one observes this Nirjala fast, one can gain all the blessings and fruits achieved by all the other Ekadashis. Devotees will get the benefits including spiritual growth, material abundance, good health, and protection from diseases, accidents and negativity.

Maharishi Vyasa has mentioned in the scriptures that Nirjala Ekadashi has the power to ensure that the devotee will not go to hell. The Vasu-Dutas (messenger of Bhagwan Vishnu) will come to receive and take the soul to the Vaikuntha, the abode of Bhagwan Vishnu.

According to the ancient scriptures, devotees should follow the below mentioned fasting rules:

  • Don’t eat or drink during the fast.
  • Don’t hurt or kill an animal.
  • Avoid sleeping.
  • Don’t indulge in fights, frauds, or any bad activity.
  • Abstain from sex, gambling and alcohol.
  • If for some reason you cannot break the fast next day, drink water and later eat food.
  • Purify yourself by eating Tulsi leave or Amalaki fruit.

It can be observed following a simple procedure at home:

  • On this day wake up before sunrise. Bath and wear clean clothes and set up a clean space for puja.
  • Begin the puja by lighting a lamp or incense stick in front of Bhagwan Vishnu.
  • Offer flowers, water, fruits, sweets and Tulsi in front of the idol or picture.
  • Recite Vishnu Sahasranama or Mantras.
  • Then offer prayers to Tulsi plant.
  • Avoid any drink or food to successfully complete the Nirjala Ekadashi fast.
  • In the evening perform puja.
  • Next day, after the sunrise, break your fast by eating food. Don’t forget to first offer the food to Bhagwan Vishnu.

When is water consumed on Nirjala Ekadashi?

It is the most important Ekadashi out of all the twenty-four Ekadashis in a year. No water or food is consumed on this day. You can only eat or drink after the Ekadashi is over.
