In just over a month’s time, India will hope to win the 2024 T20 World Cup and bring an end to their more than decade-long ICC trophy drought. They won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007 but surprisingly have never won another since. On April 30, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel named India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 which is scheduled to be played in the USA and the West Indies in June.
Squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Hardik Pandya (Vice Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.
Reserves – Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan
Eight players from India’s T20 WC 2022 squad have again made the cut in this year’s selections. They are Rohit, Kohli, Suryakumar, Pant, Pandya, Axar, Chahal, and Arshdeep.
Bumrah was originally named in the squad for 2022 but was replaced by Mohammed Shami.
Will this year’s India squad go further than the Men in Blue’s semi-final finish in 2022? Let’s have a look at all the players’ form in the 20-over format in the last year.
Rohit Sharma (c)
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma will lead India in the T20 WC 2024. The right-handed batter didn’t play any T20I match in 2023 but was named captain for the T20I series against Afghanistan in early 2024.
After scoring consecutive ducks in the series, Rohit smashed an unbeaten 121 in the final T20I in Bangalore. He carried his supreme touch into IPL 2024 and scored 315 runs in 10 matches at a strike rate of 158.29.
Hardik Pandya (vc)
All-rounder Hardik Pandya has been in and out of India’s squad over the last one year due to injury concerns.
Pandya played five T20Is since IPL 2023, scoring only 77 runs at a sub-par strike rate of 110. He took four wickets in those matches at an economy of 8.40.
The Mumbai Indians skipper has had an ordinary IPL season in 2024 having managed to score only 197 runs in 10 matches at a strike rate of 150.38. He has also picked up six wickets with the ball so far.
Yashasvi Jaiswal
Explosive opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made his T20I debut in August 2023 against West Indies and has smashed 502 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of 161.93 since then.
After a few low scores in the first half of the IPL 2024, Jaiswal amassed a magnificent ton against Mumbai. Overall, the southpaw has scored 249 runs in nine matches in IPL 2024.
Virat Kohli
India’s star batter Virat Kohli has been the top scorer (1,141 runs) for India in T20 WCs. Since the forgettable exit from the T20 WC 2022 semis, Kohli has played only two T20Is and has managed to score 29 runs.
However, the former Indian skipper is currently the orange cap holder in the IPL 2024, having smashed 500 runs in 10 matches at an average of 71.43.
Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav, the No.1 T20I batter in the world, is the backbone of team India in the 20-over format. Since IPL 2023, the hard-hitter has smashed 466 T20I runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 158.
The Mumbai Indians batter has been on a bumpy ride in the ongoing IPL 2024, having scored only 176 runs in seven innings at an average of 25.14.
Rishabh Pant (wk)
Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant made a comeback to the IPL 2024 after surviving a serious car crash in December 2022.
Since his return, the southpaw has smashed 398 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 158.56.
Sanju Samson (wk)
Sanju Samson had a disappointing tour to the West Indies in 2023, where he could only manage 73 runs in five matches at an average of 24.3. This year, Samson played only one T20I where he was dismissed for a one-ball duck against Afghanistan.
The Rajasthan Royals’ skipper has however made the most out of IPL 2024 having scored 385 runs in nine matches at 161.08.

The southpaw is currently one of the top run-scorers for Chennai in IPL 2024 with 350 runs in nine matches at 172.41.
Ravindra Jadeja
India’s star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has played only two T20 internationals since IPL 2023 where he scored 23 runs and took only a couple of wickets.

Axar Patel
Spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel has been a regular starter in India’s T20I side. Axar has played 12 T20Is since IPL 2023, scoring 73 runs apart from taking 12 wickets.
In IPL 2024, Axar has taken nine wickets and also scored 149 runs in 11 matches for Delhi Capitals so far.

Chahal has been on a dream run this IPL season having picked 13 wickets in nine matches and forced his way into India’s T20 squad.
Arshdeep Singh

Arshdeep has also picked 12 wickets in nine matches for Punjab Kings in IPL 2024.
Jasprit Bumrah
India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been on the sidelines due to several injury concerns over the last year. The fast bowler has taken four wickets in the only two T20I matches he’s played in since the start of 2023.
Bumrah is currently the purple cap holder in IPL 2024 with 14 wickets in 10 matches at an economy of 6.40.
